‘Foxcatcher’ – Movie and Book

‘Foxcatcher’, the movie, is loosely based on part of Mark’s book ‘Foxcatcher‘ on Amazon.com. The cast includes Channing Tatum as Mark, Mark Ruffalo as Dave Schultz, Steve Carell as duPont, and Sienna Miller. The film was nominated for 5 Academy Awards.

The Back Story

The Schultz brothers won more NCAA, US Open, World, and Olympic titles than any American brother combination in wrestling history.

Dave Schultz had one of the greatest high school senior years in history when he won the Great Plains Championship, a silver medal at the Tbilisi tournament, the California State Championships at one weight above his normal weight, the National Open Greco-Roman Championships and had the most pins in the least amount of time.

Mark, 17 months younger, was the Northern California age group all-around gymnastics champion. He switched to Tang Soo Do then wrestling his junior year in high school. Mark’s record was 4-6 at 130 lbs then transferred to Palo Alto California to live with his father Phil. Mark grew to 159 lbs his senior year and competed in 2 regular season 16-team tournaments and took a bronze medal at the Monte Vista Invitational. In the post season state qualifiers he had a miraculous string of victories winning the league, region, section, and the California State. California has almost 1000 schools.  Some say Dave trained Mark. The truth is Mark never wrestled with his brother until after Mark’s senior year. Mark may be the fastest improving wrestler in history by winning the largest state tournament in the nation after 16 months of training. He credits gymnastics as the basis of his athletic ability. Mark was the only California State Champion to never win a regular season tournament until 2014 when Colt Doyle pulled off the same feat.

After Mark’s senior year the brothers teamed up through their college years and beyond, capturing national and international wrestling titles from NCAA crowns to world titles. In 1984 they both won Olympic gold in Los Angeles. They are the only U.S. brothers in history to win Olympic and World Championships.
